How does the ranking algorithm work?

Padel Fast uses an ELO-based rating system. Every player starts at a rating of 500. Before each match the system calculates an expected result from the rating gap between the two sides — the bigger a favourite you are, the more you are expected to win. Your rating then moves by the difference between what actually happened and that expectation, so beating a stronger opponent is worth more than beating a weaker one. Each change is scaled by a K-factor that depends on your current level and experience: newer players (in their first ranked games) move faster so their rating quickly settles at their true level, higher-rated players gain fewer points for a win and lose more for a defeat, and genuine upsets earn a bonus. This keeps the ladder fair, self-correcting and balanced over time.

Does the ranking work for both tournaments and individual matches?

Yes. The rating system is designed to work for both tournaments and single matches. In a tournament, each match you play is rated head-to-head against the average level of the opponents you faced, and the changes are combined and applied to your rating at the end — so you are rewarded for beating strong pairs and held accountable for losing to weaker ones, not just for your final standing. A one-off match is rated the same way, using the same expected-score and K-factor logic. Whether you play a full americano, a league, or a casual game, every ranked result feeds the same rating.

Why do higher-ranked players gain fewer points?

To keep ratings meaningful and prevent inflation at the top, the amount of rating at stake changes with your level. Higher-rated players earn fewer points when they win a match they were expected to win, but lose more when they are beaten, while lower-rated and newer players move in larger steps so they reach their real level quickly. When an underdog beats a favourite, an upset bonus scales the reward up — and the favourite's loss down — in proportion to the rating gap. The result is a ladder that rewards genuine improvement rather than simply playing more games.
