How to Create a Custom Padel Tournament Format (No Spreadsheets)

Every organiser has a format in their head that no app quite supports: a social round to mix everyone up, groups to sort the field, then a final for the best and a plate for the rest. Usually that means a spreadsheet, a whiteboard and a long evening of pairings. With the Padel Fast Tournament Builder, you design that format once on a visual canvas, and Padel Fast runs it for you — pairings, schedule, live scores and standings included.

This guide explains what a tournament builder is, who it's for, and how to create your own padel tournament format step by step.

Why ready-made formats aren't always enough

Americano, Mexicano and knockouts are popular for a reason, and Padel Fast runs them all out of the box. But real events rarely fit one format from start to finish:

  • Your time slot is fixed. You have two hours and four courts, and the schedule has to fit — not the other way round.
  • Your players differ in level. You want everyone to play a fair mix early on, then tighter matches once you know who's who.
  • Everyone should keep playing. Knocking half the field out after the groups makes for a short evening; a plate keeps them on court.
  • Your club has its own traditions. A monthly ladder, a house league finale, a format your members have played for years.

Running these by hand works until it doesn't: a pairing mistake, a missed score, a standings table that doesn't add up, and twenty players waiting while you fix it.

What is a padel tournament builder?

A tournament builder lets you define the rules of a format instead of working out every match yourself. You decide who competes, how they're ranked and which stages they play through. The software turns those rules into a schedule and keeps it running as results come in.

In Padel Fast, a format you build behaves exactly like a built-in one. Players join the same way, matches are scored live on their phones, standings update after every result and you can project the tournament on a TV at the venue. The difference is that the format is yours.

You decide the rules. Padel Fast handles the pairings, the courts, the scores and the standings.

How to create a custom padel tournament format

1. Set the field

Choose whether people play as individuals, who get new partners as the event goes on, or as fixed teams that stay together from start to finish. Then set how many players or teams the format is built for.

2. Choose how players are ranked

Rank by points scored, by matches won, or with a league-style table where a win and a draw are worth what you decide. The ranking decides who moves on between stages and how the next round is seeded.

3. Lay out your phases on the canvas

This is where your format takes shape. Every stage of the event is a card on a visual canvas, connected in the order it's played, so you can see the whole tournament at a glance. Add up to five phases. Each one can be:

  • Any built-in format — Americano, Mexicano, Knockout, World Cup, Winning Lane, Beat the Box, Club Clash or Social mix.
  • A group stage, with a round robin inside each group.
  • A bracket, with seeding from the standings and an optional plate for those who go out.
  • A schedule you write yourself, match by match, for anything nothing else can express.

4. Decide who moves on

Between phases, choose who goes through: the top of the overall standings, the top of every group, or only the winners. Everyone else can carry on in a plate, so nobody's evening ends early.

5. Fit it to your time slot

Each phase shows its rounds right on the canvas. Add or remove rounds for a format like Mexicano, cap the length of a full schedule like Americano, or edit every matchup directly if you wrote the schedule yourself. You see exactly how long the event runs before anyone arrives.

6. Save it, run it, reuse it

Save your build and start a tournament from it whenever you like — next week, next month, every Friday. Keep it to yourself, or publish it to the community so other organisers can use it too. Changing a build never affects a tournament that's already running.

Formats you can build in minutes

The social-to-competitive evening

Start with a few rounds of Americano so everyone plays with everyone, then switch to Mexicano so the later rounds pair players of a similar level. Great for mixed-level club nights.

The weekend cup with a plate

Fixed teams play a group stage, the top two of every group go into a knockout, and the rest play a plate bracket. Everyone gets plenty of matches, and both brackets have a final.

The box league finale

Split the field into boxes by level with Beat the Box, let the boxes re-form from the standings so players work their way up, then finish with a knockout for the top of the table.

Who is the Tournament Builder for?

  • Clubs that run regular events and want their own house formats they can run again and again.
  • Coaches and academies who group players by level and want sessions that sort themselves.
  • Organisers and community groups running anything from a monthly social to a two-day cup.
  • Leagues that need a season finale with groups, playoffs and a plate.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to understand how pairings or brackets are worked out?

No. You describe the format — who plays, how they're ranked and which phases they go through — and Padel Fast works out every pairing, court and bracket for you.

Can players join from their phones?

Yes. Players join through the Padel Fast app or the website, enter scores from their phones and follow the live standings, just as they would in any other Padel Fast tournament.

What if players arrive late or leave early?

The first phase plays with whoever is in the tournament, so late arrivals can be added and players who leave can be removed. Later phases are played by the players who qualified for them.

Can I use a format someone else built?

Yes. Organisers can publish their formats to the community, and you can start a tournament from any published build.

How much does it cost?

The Tournament Builder is included with the Padel Fast Manager and Club subscriptions.
